ALERT: Alexandria, VA- Shooting at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park (June 14, 2017)

June 14, 2017

A shooting has taken place at a park less than two miles from our offices in Alexandria, VA.

Multiple news sources are reporting that Congressional members were at baseball practice when a shooter opened fire. Among the injured is House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

According to WUSA-TV:

A Congressman is among the people injured in a “multiple shooting” at a baseball field in Alexandria Wednesday morning, according to a CBS News Special Report.

The shooting happened in the 400 block of E Monroe Street, according to police. The incident happened at a Congressional baseball practice behind the YMCA.

CBS New reports Rep. Steve Scalise (R) from Louisiana was shot. At least for other people were shot. Some 50 shots were reportedly fired.

Authorities report that at least one person was taken to the hospital.

A suspect is believed to be in custody, Alexandria police reported.

CNN.com reports:

Rep. Steve Scalise was shot Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, a House colleague told CNN, in what sources are calling an apparent “deliberate attack.”

Rep. Mo Brooks told CNN he was on deck at a practice for the congressional baseball team when the shooting occurred. Scalise, a member of the House Republican

leadership as the majority whip, appeared to have been shot in the hip and it appeared two Capitol Hill police agents were shot, Brooks added.

According to both congressional and law enforcement sources, the shooting appears to be a “deliberate attack.” Alexandria police said earlier Wednesday they were responding to a “multiple shooting” in the city. The tweet also said the suspect is in custody “and not a threat.”

June 13, 2017

Yesterday afternoon a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Greek island of Lesbos, killing at least one person. Tremors from the earthquake were also felt in Turkey, including Istanbul.

According to the BBC:

A strong earthquake has struck off the Aegean coast of western Turkey and the Greek island of Lesbos, with tremors felt in Istanbul and Athens. The epicentre of the 6.3 magnitude quake was 5km (3 miles) south of Plomari, a town on the coast of Lesbos, the US Geological Survey said. Several buildings were damaged but the village of Vrisa was worst hit with 10 people taken to hospital.

The initial quake struck at 15:28 (12:28 GMT) on Monday and was followed by two aftershocks minutes later. Details of damage and casualties in Vrisa took some time to emerge, but the mayor told Greek media the place looked like it had been “flattened by bombs”.

Time writes:

Earthquakes are frequent in Greece and Turkey, which are on active fault lines… Experts in both countries said more aftershocks are to be expected.

Senior Greek government officials, seismologists and response teams are heading from the capital, Athens, to Lesbos to assess the damage.

ALERT: Australia- China Eastern Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Sydney (June 12, 2017)

June 12, 2017

A China Eastern Airlines flight bound for Shanghai made an emergency landing today at their initial departure point in Sydney after a hole appeared in the engine. No injuries were reported.

Fortune reported:

A technical failure, which left a gaping hole in an engine casing, forced a China Eastern flight to turn back to Sydney around an hour after takeoff.

Flight MU736, which is an Airbus A330-200 twin jet, landed back in the Australian city after the mid-air emergency on Sunday. Kathy Zhang, general manager for the Oceania region at China Eastern Airlines, told Reuters that no injuries were reported.

Passengers told Australia’s Seven News that they heard a loud sound shortly after take off followed by burning smells. “All of a sudden we heard this noise… it kind of smelt like burning” a passenger told Seven News network.

Images on social media showed a large hole on the engine casing that is more than 3ft long.

According to Reuters:

An Airbus spokesman said the company was in contact with Rolls-Royce [the plane’s engine manufacturer] to determine what occurred, and it would support the investigation into the incident.

Professor Jason Middleton, an aviation expert at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, said it appeared that the engine cowling had been ripped away forward of the main compressor blade.

“When one of these things happens you often don’t know how the damage began. It could have begun from loose screws,” he told Australian Broadcasting Corp News.

China Eastern’s Zhang said a comprehensive investigation would involve aviation authorities from Australia and China.

Ground-handling company Cathay Pacific had inspected the plane before take off, Zhang said. The company was not immediately available for comment.

ALERT: Las Vegas- Legionnaires’ Disease Reported at the Rio (June 12, 2017)

June 12, 2017

Two individuals contracted Legionnaires’ disease after staying at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, in March and April.

According to the Southern Nevada Health District on Friday:

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating two cases of Legionnaires’ disease reported in guests who stayed separately at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV in March and April. The hotel is assisting in the investigation and taking steps to provide information to past and current guests of the property.

In response to the initial illness report, the property arranged for environmental testing of its water system. Facility testing results did indicate a presence of the Legionella bacteria, and the property initiated the appropriate remediation response of chlorine disinfection. Following reports of the additional case, the Health District conducted sampling of the water system and identified Legionella bacteria throughout the system. The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino and the Health District are working together to conduct remediation and follow up sampling to ensure remediation efforts are effective.

CNN.com reports:

The hotel is disinfecting the system with chlorine … Guests were relocated from rooms served by that system, and those rooms won’t be occupied until the system is properly flushed, he said.

Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, develops when people breathe small droplets of water infected with legionella bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most healthy people who are exposed to legionella don’t get sick, the CDC says. But those who do usually develop fever, cough, chills or muscle aches. Symptoms usually begin within two to 10 days after exposure to the bacteria.

“Guests who stayed at the Rio more than two weeks ago and have not developed symptoms are not at risk for disease,” the health district said in a statement.

Reuters reports:

The crew aboard the Bombardier Inc Dash 8 plane reported seeing light smoke inside the cabin on the plane’s scheduled flight to Seattle from Calgary, and declared an emergency before landing at the airport without injuries, according to airport spokesman Perry Cooper.

Calgary resident Heather Hudson, 53, said she was a passenger on the flight and described a mild-smelling smoke appearing at the front end of the cabin and slowly filling the rest of the plane shortly before landing.

Flight attendants worked quickly to check the overhead bins for the source of the smoke, but did not appear to find it, Hudson told Reuters via Twitter direct message.

According to KIRO-TV:

Flight 8301 from Calgary landed safely at Sea-Tac at 8:28 a.m. Thursday.

Port of Seattle fire met the plane on the runway and the passengers were evacuated onto shuttles. No one was hurt.

ALERT: Australia- Bomb Scare Evacuates Flight (June 6, 2017)

June 6, 2017

A domestic flight in Australia was evacuated, today, due to a bomb hoax.

The BBC reports:

A Virgin Australia plane has been evacuated after a threatening note was found on a domestic flight from Sydney to Albury, police have said. Passengers were forced out an emergency exit window of the 68-seat plane after it landed safely in Albury on Tuesday. A male passenger, 30, was arrested and charged over a “document threatening death or grievous bodily harm”. Police did not disclose the alleged details of the note, found in a toilet, but said it was not terror-related. A Virgin Australia spokesman said flight VA1174 arrived safely at Albury airport and was met by police.

According to The Australian:

The arrested passenger was said to be calm throughout the flight. He read a novel and went to the bathroom once.

Local police congratulated cabin crew and passengers for the swift evacuation. “The plane landed at 9.35am and within five minutes we had the plane and the occupants secure and safe,” Albury commander Superintendent Evan Quarmby told reporters. “All of the occupants of the aeroplane were evacuated safely, very efficiently and should all be congratulated on the assistance they’ve given to police this morning.”

It was initially reported the doors of the plane were “ripped off” by authorities but Virgin later clarified they were opened from the inside, likely by cabin crew. Passengers were told to leave their luggage and jump about 1.2 metres from the exits onto the tarmac.

June 6, 2017

Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Maldives, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Yemen have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, because of accusations it supports the Muslim Brotherhood an Islamist group considered a terrorist organization by Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Saudi Arabia and Bahrain first cut ties on Monday morning. Egypt, Yemen, Libya’s interim government, and UAE, encouraged by Saudi authorities to do the same, quickly followed suit. They are preparing to expel diplomats, close off borders, and institute a travel ban on flights to and from the country. Kuwait and Oman are the only Gulf Cooperation Council members retaining ties.

The five major Gulf airlines have issued statements and travel waiver policies: Gulf Air, Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, and Saudia.

Because of the recent political events, customers may feel uncomfortable flying QR to connecting points beyond Qatar. If that’s the case, please follow QR’s policy on refunds and rebook them on EK as the first option and EY as the second to any point beyond, not to Qatar. If they want a connection to DOH look at LH.

Qatar Airways flights will need to alter flight times to allow for different flight paths. Flights to/from the US will now go over Turkey and Iran.

According to BBC News:

Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authorities have banned Qatari planes from landing or stopping at its airports, as well as crossing Saudi airspace.

Egypt has also closed off its airspace to flights originating from Qatar, and said all flights between the two countries would be halted from 04:00 GMT on Tuesday and “continue until further notice.”

Airlines from many of the affected countries, including Bahrain’s Gulf Air, Etihad Airways and Emirates, say they plan to cancel flights to and from the Qatari capital Doha starting from Tuesday morning.

Budget carriers, such as Fly Dubai and Air Arabia, have also cancelled routes to Doha.

Qatar Airways’ has arranged for three charter flights today from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia via Muscat to Doha, Qatar. To learn more, go here.

ALERT: London Attack- 12 Arrested after Van and Knife Incidents (June 4, 2017)

June 4, 2017

London police arrested 12 people after yesterday’s London terror attack, which left seven people dead and 48 injured. Three suspects in a van had plowed through pedestrians on London Bridge. The attackers, wearing fake bomb vests, jumped from the van and stabbed people on the street and in bars in the Borough Market area.

According to the Transport for London, which operates the city trains, the London Bridge Underground station remained closed on Sunday, with service being offered by bus. Waterloo and City lines train service plans to resume Monday morning. There are partial closures for the London Overground, Hammersmith and other areas.

According to the BBC:

The arrests in Barking, east London, followed a raid at a flat belonging to one of the three attackers.

A white van hit pedestrians on London Bridge at about 22:00 BST on Saturday, then three men got out and stabbed people in nearby Borough Market. They were shot dead by police minutes later.

Condemning the attack, Theresa May said it was “time to say enough is enough”.

Controlled explosions were also carried out at the flat in Barking on Sunday morning.

According to neighbours, the dead attacker had lived there for about three years and was married with two children.

It is the third terror attack in the UK in three months, following the car and knife attack in Westminster in March, which left five people dead, and the Manchester bombing less than two weeks ago, in which 22 people were killed.

CBS News is reporting: A resort in Manila was placed on lockdown early Friday following reports of gunfire.

“Resorts World Manila is currently on lockdown following reports of gunfire from unidentified men,” the resort posted to its Twitter feed.

The U.S. State Department urged people to avoid the area.

Talking Points: United Kingdom (June 5, 2017)

Talking Points – United Kingdom

Copyright © 2017 – Travel Leaders Group LLC. All rights reserved.

The following Talking Points can be used in conversations with the media and clients who have questions about travel to the United Kingdom. (June 5, 2017)

1. While the UK’s threat level for international terrorism remains at its highest level, following an attack on London Bridge, the U.S. State Department has no Travel Warning or Alert in effect advising Americans against travel to London or the UK.

2. Safety is our top priority for our clients.

3. We provide the facts so our clients can make informed decisions about their travel plans.

Below you will find additional information, supporting material and statistics to help further illustrate each talking point.

1. While the UK’s threat level for international terrorism remains at its highest level, following an attack on London Bridge, the U.S. State Department has no Travel Warning or Alert in effect advising Americans against travel to London or the UK.

On the evening of June 3, a van deliberately ran into pedestrians on London Bridge. Three men got out and stabbed people at Borough Market before being killed by police.

o According to the UK’s Guardian, “seven people have been killed and dozens injured during attacks in two closely connected areas of London on Saturday night. The police are treating the attacks as terrorist incidents.”

“Police were called after a white rental van ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge at about 9.58pm on Saturday night. The van continued on to nearby Borough Market where three attackers emerged and carried out multiple stabbings in pubs and restaurants.”

“Armed police arrived and shot the attackers dead within eight minutes of being alerted. The attackers were armed with knives and wore what turned out to be fake suicide vests.”

o The BBC reports that “police investigating Saturday night’s terror attack in London say they know the identity of the three attackers who killed seven people and injured 48.”

“Eleven people are being held after police raids in Barking on Sunday. One of the properties is believed to be the home of one of the attackers.”

o Transport for London’s website states “Following the incident on London Bridge on [June 3], we have resumed running a full Tube service, but there are some changes to London Bridge Underground station, roads and bus routes in the area.”

The UK’s raised its terror threat to the highest possible level of “critical” on May 23, which means “an attack is expected imminently.”

o It is the first time a threat level of “critical” has been issued in the UK since 2007.

o Interior Minister Amber Rudd said “troops were being deployed to key sites across Britain to help prevent further attacks,” reports Reuters.

 According to Reuters, “up to 3,800 soldiers could be deployed on Britain’s streets, taking on guard duties at places like Buckingham Palace and Downing Street to free up police to focus on patrols and investigation. An initial deployment of 984 had been ordered, initially in London, then elsewhere.”

 The UK’s Telegraph reported that Prime Minister Theresa May “also announced that troops would replace police officers at set-piece events including sports venues and concerts.”

o “It will be the first time since 2003 – when the Government reacted to a plot to bring down an airliner – that troops are deployed on the streets.”

o “Security will also be stepped up at major public events and terrorist targets such as railway stations and airports.”

 On May 22, 2017, at Manchester Arena, a suicide bomb was detonated at the conclusion of a concert killing 22 people and injuring 116.

o According to NPR, “The explosion struck the area between Manchester Arena and the adjacent Victoria Train Station; police say the first report came in at 10:33 p.m. – a time that seems to have been chosen because it meant crowds of concert-goers were starting to head home from the arena, which seats around 21,000.”

o The BBC reported, “A lone attacker set off a homemade bomb in the foyer at 22:33 BST” and “armed police have arrested a 23-year-old man in Chorlton, south Manchester, in connection with the attack.”

“It is the worst terrorist attack in the UK since the 7 July bombings in 2005 in which 52 people were killed by four suicide bombers. So-called Islamic State has said it was behind the attack, via IS channels on the messaging app Telegram.”

 In March, an attacker rammed his vehicle into a crowd on Westminster Bridge and stabbed a police officer. That attack left five people dead.

 There are currently no Travel Warnings or Travel Alerts in place for the United Kingdom (UK) from the U.S. State Department, nevertheless, terrorism knows no boundaries.

o There is a Travel Alert in place for all of Europe (issued May 1, 2017).

o In addition, there is a longstanding Worldwide Caution that has continuously been in effect since 9/11.

The Government of Canada has “no nationwide advisory in effect for the United Kingdom” and recommends travelers “exercise normal security precautions.”

2. Safety is our top priority for our clients.

We highly recommend that U.S. citizens follow the advice of the State Department and register their international travel plans at https://step.state.gov/step. By entering information into the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), the Department of State can better assist travelers in an emergency.

 We also strongly encourage all of our clients, whether they are traveling domestically or internationally, to purchase travel insurance, particularly right at the same time as travel has been booked. Travel insurance offers an additional layer of protection for travelers and can potentially help save a traveler hundreds or thousands of dollars if a medical or travel emergency occurs.

While no one can say with certainty that any destination is 100% safe, we strongly encourage our clients to use care and common sense – no matter where they travel – to maximize their safety and security. For example:

o Leave your itinerary, and passport data page, with a friend or family member back home so you can be contacted in case of an emergency.

o Know and respect the laws in the country you are visiting.

o Follow your instincts and avoid any areas or situations that seem as though they could become dangerous.

o Remain alert to their surroundings at all times.

o Avoid all demonstrations, as even peaceful ones can quickly become unruly and a foreigner could become a target of harassment. If caught unexpectedly near a demonstration, obey instructions from police and leave the area as quickly as possible.

o Ask tour guides and hotel officials about any planned demonstrations in the locations they plan to visit.

o Do not display expensive looking jewelry, large amounts of money or other valuable items. Also, do not leave luggage unattended in public areas and do not accept packages from strangers.

o Check with your cell phone provider prior to departure to see if your phone is capable of roaming on international networks.

o Check your medical insurance coverage to make sure it applies overseas. If it doesn’t, consider buying travel insurance that covers overseas medical attention and medical evacuation.

The U.S. State Department also offers a helpful Traveler’s Checklist that provides additional travel tips.

Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained through the Consular Information Program documents, by downloading the free Smart Traveler iPhone App, following the State Department on Twitter or the Bureau of Consular Affairs page on Facebook. Citizens can also call 888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or 202-501-4444 from other countries.

3. We provide the facts so our clients can make an informed decision about their travel plans.

We closely monitor the U.S. Department of State website, as well as other governmental sources, for travel alerts as well as the more severe travel warnings for all destinations, including those that are most popular with our clients.

 Should we become aware of an issue for a specific destination, we alert clients who may be planning to travel there so they can determine for themselves if they still wish to travel.

Also, should we become aware of an issue for a specific destination where a client is currently located; we try to immediately contact the client to check on their well-being and work to assist them if they require alternate travel arrangements.
