ALERT: United Airlines Flight 1516 (LIR to IAH) Forced to Make Emergency Landing in Costa Rica (April 25, 2016)

April 25, 2017

Yesterday, a United Airlines 737 was forced to make an emergency landing after one of its engines overheated over the Pacific Ocean. UAL Flight 1516 from Liberia, Costa Rica, had taken off for Houston Intercontinental, but returned to Liberia. A new aircraft was dispatched today to Liberia to ferry passengers back to the United States.

According to NBC News in Dallas/Fort Worth:

According to SF Gate:

A Texas-bound United Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing after one of its engines overheated while flying over the Pacific Ocean, passengers say. Flight 1516 departed Liberia, Costa Rica, to Houston, Texas, Monday before the 737 experienced “a maintenance issue,” according to United Airlines spokesperson Erin Benson. The pilot returned to Liberia’s Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport for an emergency landing.

Burglar Can’t Escape Store

Jody Genessy, a passenger on the flight, told NBC News it was one of the most terrifying things he has ever experienced. “We circled for about an hour dumping fuel and when we went in for a landing, the plane tipped quickly to one side,” Genessy said.

“My friends on the other side of the plane said they saw the wings almost touched the tarmac and then went too far back to the other side…and he [the pilot] pulled up. It was about a split second. Then we circled around again and it was wobbly and we were all freaking out. It was a pretty horrifying way to end an amazing weekend,” Genessy said.

Man Receives Eagle Scout Badge 50 Years Later

Genessy told NBC News United provided him and his wife meal vouchers and a room at a nearby hotel ahead of their rescheduled flight Tuesday. “United is getting a lot of grief right now and I’m a Delta guy but my hat’s off to the pilot,” Genessy added. “As far as I’m concerned he saved our lives.”

A new aircraft was dispatched to take passengers to Houston Tuesday.

ALERT: Chile- 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake (April 24, 2017)

Saturday, April 24, 2017

Alert – Chile: 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake

According to Reuters:

A major earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck off the west coast of Chile on Monday, rocking the capital Santiago and generating at least two significant aftershocks.

No major damage was immediately apparent, according to an assessment by Chile’s emergency services. The Chilean Navy and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was not expected to cause a tsunami.

The quake was centered 22 miles (35 km) west of the coastal city of Valparaiso at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles (10 km) below the seabed, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Chilean authorities initially ordered a preventative evacuation of the coastal area near Valparaiso, some 60 miles (97 km) west of Santiago, in case of a tsunami, but canceled it shortly afterward.

A magnitude 7.1 quake is considered major and is capable of causing widespread and heavy damage, but the effects of this one would have been tempered because it was offshore.

At least two aftershocks of magnitudes 5.0 and 5.4 were recorded in the same spot and could be felt in Santiago.

Chile, located on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” has a long history of deadly quakes, including a 8.8 magnitude quake in 2010 off the south-central coast, which also triggered a tsunami that devastated coastal towns.

ALERT: California- Massive Power Outage in San Francisco (April 21, 2017)

April 21, 2017

Earlier today, a massive power outage across San Francisco caused blackouts across the city. No injuries have been reported.

According to SF Gate:

A massive power outage in San Francisco on Friday morning caused a blackout in neighborhoods across the city, from the Financial District to the Presidio, forcing the closure of businesses, a federal courthouse and a BART station, officials said. A spokesman for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said at least 90,000 customers lost power.

BART’s Montgomery Station was closed due to the outage, which struck after 9 a.m. BART rains were running through Montgomery Station without stopping.

Cable cars were also impacted and shuttles were put in place to provide service, according to the Municipal Transportation Agency.

There were reports of traffic lights out in many city intersections, and traffic was backing up on downtown streets. The Phillip Burton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse at 450 Golden Gate Ave. was among the many buildings closed down by the outage.

A PG&E spokesman said the company was trying to determine the cause of the outage, as well as how long it would take to restore power. The San Francisco Fire Department was responding to calls for service, but reported no injuries as of 10 a.m.

ALERT: France- Paris Shooting Closes Champs-Elysées (April 20, 2017)

Thursday, April 20, 2017

Alert – France: Paris Shooting Closes Champs-Elysées (Update)

This evening, a shooting took place in Paris in which a police officer and the suspect were killed. The Champs-Elysées has been closed due to the attack.

According to France24:

A gunman killed one police officer and wounded two others before being killed himself in an attack on the Champs-Elysees in the heart of the French capital on Thursday evening.

The officer who was killed in the attack was shot while in a police car waiting at a red light by an attacker driving by, a police union representative said on Twitter.

Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert told AP that the attacker targeted police guarding the area near the Franklin Roosevelt metro station at the center of the avenue.

Reuters also reports:

A French interior ministry spokesman said it was too early to say what the motive of the attack was, but that it was clear the police officers had been deliberately targeted. The French prosecutors’ office said the counter-terrorism office had opened an inquiry.

Three police sources said, however, that the shooting could have been an attempt at an armed robbery.

In addition, the U.S. Embassy in Paris issued a Security Message for U.S. citizens:

One police officer was killed along with the assailant. Police have locked down the area. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the area, heed instructions of local authorities, and monitor local media for updates. We strongly encourage U.S. citizens in France to directly contact concerned family members in the U.S. to advise them of your safety.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor media and local information sources and factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities. U.S. citizens may monitor English-language French media at the following:

Talking Points: France (April 21, 2017)

Talking Points – France

Copyright © 2017 – Travel Leaders Group LLC. All rights reserved.

The following Talking Points can be used in conversations with the media and clients when discussing travel to France and recent terror attacks. (Updated April 21, 2017)

1. While there have been high profile attacks since the beginning of 2015, including a recent police shooting on the Champs-Elysées, the U.S. State Department has no Travel Warning or Alert in effect advising Americans against travel to France.

2. All travelers, no matter what country they visit, can take precautions to help ensure their safety and well-being.

3. Safety is our top priority for our clients. We provide them with the facts so they can make informed decisions about their travels.

Below you will find additional information, supporting material and statistics to help further illustrate each talking point.

1. While there have been high profile attacks since the beginning of 2015, including a recent police shooting on the Champs-Elysées, the U.S. State Department has no Travel Warning or Alert in effect advising Americans against travel to France.

On April 20, 2017, a gunman opened fire on a police van, in Paris, on the Champs-Elysées, killing one officer.

o “ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack on the Champs-Élysées,” according to the Financial Times.

o According to France24, “French security officials are investigating a Thursday night shooting attack on Paris’s Champs-Élysées, which killed one policeman and severely injured two others. The gunman, who was known to police, was shot dead shortly after the attack.”

o The BBC reported, “A car pulled up alongside a police bus just before 21:00 (19:00 GMT) and a man got out, opening fire on the bus with an automatic weapon, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said. After killing an officer, the man attempted to run away while shooting at other officers, two of whom he injured, the spokesman added. He was then shot dead by security forces.

o According to the UK’s Guardian, “The attacker, a 39-year-old man widely named as Karim Cheurfi, was known to French security services. Media reported he had served nearly 15 years in prison after being convicted of three attempted murders, two against police officers, and was released on parole in 2015.”

“Local media say the 39-year-old lived in the city’s suburbs, and had been seen as a potential Islamist radical,” according to the BBC.

o “It was not the only terrorist threat of the week. French police found 3 kg of homemade explosives and an ISIS flag in the home of a man arrested in Marseilles on Tuesday for planning a terrorist attack,” reported the Financial Times.

 France is preparing for its upcoming Presidential elections; the first round of voting will takes place on April 23. The Guardian also reports:

o “Prime minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, said the government had reviewed its extensive election security measures and was ‘fully mobilized’ in the wake of the attack. He appealed for national unity and for people ‘not to succumb to fear.’

o “He said more than 50,000 police and gendarmes and 7,000 soldiers would be on duty for Sunday’s first-round vote in the two-stage election, and nothing could be allowed to ‘hamper this democratic moment.’”

o “The murder of a policeman in a terror attack cast a shadow over the last day of France’s volatile presidential election campaign as candidates debated the country’s status in the EU’s free movement system and the role of Islam,” reports the Financial Times.

 Because of attacks in the past two years, a national state of emergency is still in effect, in France. It is set to expire on July 15, after the elections.

o On July 14, 2016 – Bastille Day in France, in Nice, a self-proclaimed ISIS terrorist drove a truck filled with guns, explosives and grenades into a crowd gathered for a fireworks display along the city’s Promenade des Anglais. At least 84 people were killed with three Americans among the dead. An additional 308 people were wounded.

o On November 13, 2015, in Paris, a series of coordinated terror attacks occurred at various locations across the city – including the Bataclan theater, several restaurants and cafes in the 10th and 11th districts and outside the Stade de France – in which 130 people were killed and another 368 were injured, some seriously.

o On January 7, 2015, in Paris, two terrorists broke into a French weekly newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, where they killed 11 and injured another 11.

No Travel Alert or Travel Warning has been issued by the State Department cautioning Americans traveling to France. The U.S. Embassy in Paris issued a “Security Message for U.S. Citizens,” which says in part:

o In the wake of the April 20, 2017, attack on police in Paris and continued terrorist threats against France and Europe detailed in the Department’s Worldwide Caution, we strongly urge U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. Terrorist groups continue to plot attacks in Europe as foreign fighters return home from Syria and Iraq, while other individuals may be radicalized or inspired by ISIS propaganda. European authorities continue to warn of additional attacks on major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers, places of worship, and the transportation sector, frequently prompting heightened security at notable public venues and coordinated counterterrorism operations.

o The state of emergency allows the government to prevent the circulation of individuals and to create zones of protection and security. There are reinforced measures throughout the communes in the Ile de France region. These allow for house arrest of any person whose activities are deemed dangerous, the closure of theaters and meeting places, the surrender of weapons, and the possibility of administrative house searches.

o U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor media and local information sources and factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities.

o U.S. citizens may wish to download the Government of France smartphone application, SAIP, that will alert users to terrorist attacks or other exceptional events. The emergency system sends warnings directly to smartphones, and will include a brief description of what is happening and advice on how to react. The

app is available in both French and English. You can download the SAIP app for Android from the Google Play Store and the SAIP app for IPhone from the iTunes store.

o We strongly encourage U.S. citizens in France to directly contact concerned family members in the U.S. to advise them of your safety.

The United Kingdom’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office does not warn against travel to France, but it does advise the following:

o “There is a high threat from terrorism. Due to ongoing threats to France by Islamist terrorist groups, and recent French military intervention against Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL), the French government has warned the public to be especially vigilant and has reinforced its security measures.”

o “Around 17 million British nationals visit France every year. Most visits are trouble-free. The most common problem reported is pick-pocketing. See Safety and security.”

 The Government of Canada indicates, “There is no nationwide advisory in effect for France. However, you should exercise a high degree of caution due to the current elevated threat of terrorism.”

2. All travelers, no matter what country they visit, can take precautions to help ensure their safety and well-being.

We recommend that U.S. citizens follow the advice of the State Department and register their travel plans at https://step.state.gov. This will help the State Department contact travelers if there is a family emergency in the U.S., or in the event an emergency transpires in the place where the individual is traveling.

o The U.S. State Department also offers a helpful guide called Traveler’s Checklist which provides additional travel tips.

o Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained through the Consular Information Program documents, by downloading the free Smart Traveler iPhone App, following the State Department on Twitter or the Bureau of Consular Affairs page on Facebook. Citizens can also call 888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or 202-501-4444 from other countries. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, Eastern Time (except U.S. federal holidays).

 While no one can say with certainty that any destination is 100% safe, we strongly encourage our clients to use care and common sense – no matter where they travel – to maximize their safety and security. For example:

o Leave your itinerary, and passport data page, with a friend or family member back home so you can be contacted in case of an emergency.

o Know and respect the laws in the country you are visiting.

o Remain alert to your surroundings at all times. Follow your instincts and avoid any areas or situations that seem as though they could become dangerous.

o Avoid all demonstrations, as even peaceful ones can quickly become unruly and a foreigner could become a target of harassment. If caught unexpectedly near a demonstration, obey instructions from police and leave the area as quickly as possible.

o Do not display expensive looking jewelry, large amounts of money or other valuable items. Also, do not leave luggage unattended in public areas and do not accept packages from strangers.

o Check with your cell phone provider prior to departure to see if your phone is capable of roaming on GSM or 3G/4G international networks.

o Check your medical insurance coverage to make sure it applies overseas. If it doesn’t, consider buying travel insurance that covers overseas medical attention and medical evacuation.

3. Safety is our top priority for our clients. We provide them with the facts so they can make informed decisions about their travels.

Our business is founded on repeat customers. Therefore, we want to be sure everything goes off without a hitch.

 We provide the facts so our clients can make informed decisions about their travel plans.

 We closely monitor the U.S. Department of State website for travel alerts for all destinations, including those that are most popular with our clients.

 Should we become aware of an issue for a specific destination, we alert clients who may be planning to travel there so they can make determine for themselves if they still wish to travel.

 We also work closely with respected airlines, hotels, resorts, cruise lines, tour operators and other suppliers to remain informed of security precautions they’re taking to guard our clients’ safety.

ALERT: Emirates- Cuts US Service Due to “Weakened Demand to the U.S.” (April 19, 2017)

April 19, 2017

Today, Emirates announced it will reduce flights over the next two months to five of the 12 U.S. cities it serves, including those to Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Orlando and Seattle. The airline attributes the cuts to “weakened demand to the U.S.”

According to the NBC News:

Dubai-based Emirates airline announced Wednesday it will reduce its service to the United States in response to a drop in demand. The airline attributes this to actions taken by the U.S. government, such as restrictions on electronic devices in cabins and a travel ban for some majority-Muslim countries. The airline said it will be reducing flights to five of the 12 U.S. cities it currently serves.

“This is a commercial decision in response to weakened travel demand to the U.S.,” Emirates said in a statement provided to NBC News. “The recent actions taken by the U.S. government relating to the issuance of entry visas, heightened security vetting, and restrictions on electronic devices in aircraft cabins, have had a direct impact on consumer interest and demand for air travel into the U.S.”

Emirates added that until the start of 2017, its operations in the United States had been experiencing healthy growth and performance.

“However, over the past 3 months, we have seen a significant deterioration in the booking profiles on all our U.S. routes, across all travel segments. Emirates has therefore responded as any profit-oriented enterprise would, and we will redeploy capacity to serve demand on other routes on our global network.”

Emirates said it will continue to monitor the situation “with the view to reinstate and grow our US flight operations as soon as viable.”

Starting May 1 and 23, respectively, flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando will drop from daily service to five time a week. On June 1 and 2, respectively, service to Seattle and Boston will drop from twice-daily services to a daily service. And, starting July 1, flights to Los Angeles will also drop from twice-daily service to a daily service.

ALERT:United Kingdom- London Euston Trains Halted by Fire Alongside Tracks (April 19, 2017)

April 19, 2017

Today, a fire alongside the railroad tracks near South Hampstead (north London) has damaged signaling equipment and thus the power supplier to Euston Station was cut. Euston Station was then evacuated, and train services were suspended.

According to the BBC:

London Euston station has been evacuated and train services suspended due to a trackside fire. Network Rail said the fire, near South Hampstead, north London, damaged signalling equipment.

The power supply to Euston station was temporarily cut as a result of the incident, leading to the evacuation. Engineers hope to restore services as soon as possible but it is warned full timetables are unlikely to resume until Thursday morning.

The fire affected customers on London Midland, Virgin and Southern trains. It also took out a stretch of the London Overground line between Euston and Harrow & Wealdstone.

Network Rail said: “An electrical fire at South Hampstead has stopped trains running in or out of London Euston this evening. Train customers are impacted in London and the length of the West Coast main line, including Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. Network Rail engineers are trying to get some trains moving this evening on the West Coast main line by using emergency generators to restore temporary power to signals – the traffic lights of the railway. Engineers are preparing to work through the night to install 100 metres of 11,000-volt power cables, with the aim of getting services back to normal tomorrow morning.”

Customers on Virgin trains were advised not to travel south of Birmingham. It said tickets would be accepted for travelling on Thursday or passengers could get a full refund.

Passengers are advised to use services provided by Chiltern Railways, East Midlands Trains and Great Western Railway or check with National Rail Enquiries before travelling.

ALERT: InterContinental Hotels Group Confirms Data Breach (April 19, 2017)

April 19, 2017

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) confirmed another data breach late last week in an official statement. A list of affected IHG franchise locations and respective time frames, which may vary by location, is available here.

This latest breach occurred at more than 1,100 locations between September 29 and December 29, 2016. The hotel brands impacted include: Candlewood Suites, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo, and Staybridge Suites.

In February, IHG announced a breach impacting credit cards used at the hotel bars and restaurants from August through December 2016.

According to Skift:

Last week, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) announced it had suffered a data breach at multiple IHG-branded franchise hotel locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico during the period of September 29, 2016 to December 29, 2016.

IHG did not disclose the exact number of properties impacted. To learn which properties were impacted, guests need to search for hotels that may have been impacted on IHG’s website.

It’s the second such data breach the company has revealed this year. The earlier breach, announced in February, impacted 12 hotels in the U.S. The company operates and manages hotel brands that include Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Candlewood Suites, Hotel Indigo, and InterContinental Hotels.

Business Travel News reports:

The credit card breach that affected payment cards used at InterContinental Hotels Group properties last year hit a much broader swath of the company’s franchise portfolio than the 12 revealed back in February.

IHG issued a statement disclosing that cards used at IHG franchise locations in North America and Puerto Rico between Sept. 29, 2016, and Dec. 29, 2016, may have been affected by malware installed on front-desk payment systems at certain locations. IHG didn’t disclose which properties the breach targeted, but an online database of hotels that might have been affected includes more than 1,100 locations under the Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites, Crowne Plaza and Hotel Indigo brands.

The adoption of IHG’s Secure Payment Solution, a point-to-point-encryption payment-acceptance solution, halted the malware’s effectiveness at locations where it was installed last year, according to IHG. The company said investigations revealed no indication that guest information beyond cardholder name, card number, expiration date and internal verification code were affected.
